Camera Japan Festival
A visual identity project based on the Camera Japan Festival, using a symbolic approach to explore bilingual typography across print and promotional materials.
Cilent: School Project
Scope: Brand Identity | Print Design
Tools: Ilustrator, Indesign,Figma
My objective for this project is to communicate a cultural understanding of Japan through the celebration of contemporary Japanese cinema, traditional performances, and culinary experiences. Camera Japan Festival is an international film festival held in the Netherlands that brings together audiences across multiple cities, creating a space for cultural exchange through film, language, and visual communication.
The visual identity for this three-day festival program was designed to bridge communities by welcoming both local Dutch residents and those interested in Japanese culture, fostering cross-cultural connections and shared experiences.
The design approach reflects key themes associated with the festival—lively, cinematic, celebratory, traditional, colourful, exhilarating, and inclusive. A symbolic direction was used to reference Japanese cultural motifs in an abstract form and allowing the visuals to communicate meaning beyond language. Hand-drawn elements were combined with traditional shapes and patterns, supported by a balanced sans-serif typographic system using Futura. The colour palette shifts between bold and muted tones. The identity also supports a multilingual structure, with Dutch acting as a welcoming bridge alongside English and Japanese.
The final applications of the design include a poster, brochure, and e-tickets.
